Shopping in New York on a Budget: 3 Unconventional Options

When it comes to shopping in New York on a budget, some of the best places to shop in the city are not-so-hidden gems or open secrets. I’m not a native New Yorker, but I know how to shop – and in my opinion, the spots I mention below are some of the best places to shop in NYC on a budget. It’s all about knowing where to look.

So you want to go shopping in New York on a budget?

sample sales

If you’re looking for great deals on designer clothes and accessories in New York City, you should definitely check out the sample sales. Sample sales are events where fashion brands sell their excess inventory at significantly discounted prices. The biggest company that hosts these sales is 260 Sample Sale, but there are other options such as Eclipse, or individual designers. If you’re on social media, there are also accounts you can follow that take the legwork out of finding them such as Madison Ave Spy and The Sales Girl.

closet sales

This type of sale is the most elusive out of everything mentioned in this post. It’s truly IYKYK situation. You have to follow the right people – usually they work in fashion or are media-adajcent. And you have to see what they’re posting enough so that you don’t miss when they’re holding a closet sale. There is no rhyme or reason here. It’s just people (influencer and professionals alike) who are literally cleaning out their closets, hence the name, ‘closet sale’. (Although, I’ve also seen it referred to as a stoop sale if it takes place in from of a brownstone.)

Here’s an example, I went to a sample sale held by Crystal who is a founder, producer, TV judge, among other things. I’ve been following her since 2018. She’s had closet sales in the past, but I managed to make it to her most recent one.

My biggest advice for finding these is to search “closet sale” or “stoop sale” and test your luck that way. Otherwise, follow some folks you admire whether its for their style or what they do and hope one day they open up their closet for public consumption.

This past summer, some writers I follow had a stoop sale. I spent too much time at brunch and totally missed it. I was gutted.

flee markets

Admittedly, I don’t have much experience when it comes to flea markets. It’s still on my to-do list. However, I’ve heard that when it comes to unique and affordable shopping experiences in New York City, flea markets are a treasure trove of hidden gems. They’re bustling markets attract locals and tourists alike, offering a wide array of vintage finds, handmade crafts, antiques, and one-of-a-kind treasures. If you’re looking to shop in NYC on a budget, flea markets should be at the top of your list apparently.

Here are a few options that I’ve heard of, but yet to try:

  • Brooklyn Flea: one of the most famous flea markets in NYC
  • Artists & Fleas Market: for a taste of Brooklyn’s eclectic charm
  • Hell’s Kitchen Flea Market: another must-visit flea market in NYC
  • GreenFlea Market: if you’re in search of a more bohemian experience

The main caveat with all of these options is that they’re time-limited. Some last a few days, while others are only available for a few hours on a random weekend. Good luck and happy shopping!
