My childhood friend/bff gave me this t-shirt in 2013. To be honest, its still in ‘like-new’ condition since I haven’t worn it much these past 4 years. And yes, it is a One Direction tee. I feel no shame wearing it. We loved One Direction when they were together, still love them now (as a group, the only solo artist I support out of the five is Harry Styles). Band t-shirts are in, or more accurately t-shirts in general. Retailers such as Forever 21 have a large selection of t-shirts ranging from fake concert events to nostalgia-inducing designs. For those with a more expensive taste in clothes, Gucci tees have been popping up everywhere. Trendsetters such as Ashley Madekewe and @coco_pinkprincess can be seen dressed in Gucci tees on their Instagrams.
The styling possibilities for t-shirts are endless. Tees can be dressed up or down, girly or tomboyish it all depends on the wearer. Accessorizing a shirt with a head wrap is not something you see everyday. There is no designated occasion where head wraps are worn, but they are often worn with afro-centric looks (at this point in time). Back in the day of colonies, there were codes called “sumptuary laws” which forced black women to cover their hair with head wraps, scarves and bandanas. This effort to oppress black women later became a symbol of rebellion and can be seen as a form of appreciation for African roots. Today, head wraps can be worn for various reasons. For this shoot in particular, my reason for wearing a head wrap is simply to avoid having to deal with my hair that day.
